Article Editing and Book 1

TASK #1: Article Editing

Attribution is stating who said something. Attribution is essential in all the media, including radio and television. Journalists do it so that your readers or listeners can know who is speaking or where the information in the story comes from. You can use attribution for both spoken and written information, so that you attribute information gathered from interviews, speeches, reports, books, films or even other newspapers, radio or television stations.

You can find more information on Attribution on Mr. Craddock’s blog

Take this time now to revisit your Articles and make any changes that are necessary. All work that is submitted will be regraded. If you have not finished your article, please do so with these clarifications in consideration.

Make sure your article includes:
  • Research on your topic
  • Attribution to outside resources
  • MLA style heading
  • Title
  • MLA style Works Cited page
  • Is 500-600 words
If you finish early, please complete any missing homework / blog posts.

TASK #2: V for Vendetta Book 1

The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those with no sides and no causes. Those who won’t take measure of their own strength, for fear of antagonizing their own weakness. Those who don’t like to make waves—or enemies. Those for whom freedom, honour, truth, and principles are only literature. Those who live small, mate small, die small. It’s the reductionist approach to life: if you keep it small, you’ll keep it under control. If you don’t make any noise, the bogeyman won’t find you. But it’s all an illusion, because they die too, those people who roll up their spirits into tiny little balls so as to be safe. Safe?! From what? Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. I choose my own way to burn.
-Sophie Scholl

Discussions:
  • How does the control of media play a role is oppression? How has V combatted this?
  • Do you see parallels between the government in the novel and today's United States government? Do you believe we're moving closer to the kind of government shown in the novel, or away from it? What are the most important differences between our government and the one in the novel?
  • Do you see any parallels between how the government uses media in the novel and how the government uses media in today's world?
  • How does citizen journalism play into all of this?

TASK #3: Unplug

Please read the handout and article online: A Day Without Media. Contrast this article and website with the article handout "Fighting a Social Media Addiction". In the COMMENT section below, post answers to questions for critical reading:
  • Consider the Maryland report alongside Johnson's "Fighting a Social Media Addiction" especially in light of Rutledge's claim that the report's conclusion "had nothing to do with addiction" [para. 7]. To what extent do you think that "Fighting a Social Media Addiction" accurately represents the Maryland study? Why?
Finally, this weekend (Saturday-Monday) choose one day to unplug. Investigate how difficult or easy it is to unplug from all media sources during the day. Take notes about your reaction during this day. Bring your notes back with you next class.

HOMEWORK: See above. Unplug. Take notes about your feelings/attitude/activities during the day you unplug. If you break, note the time and what broke you to check or use the media. Bring your notes to next class. Read up Book 2 of V for Vendetta (pg. 179).
